I talked with a few different people from the team, and also the HR person. They asked a lot about what I learned from past projects; it wasn't about if it was applicable to this job, but more about how I worked. Then, there was a technical interview where I had to debug some code in either C++ or Java. They didn't absolutely need you to fix it, but they cared about how you approached it and your comfort level with those languages.

Behavioral Technical

I talked to a really nice HR person at this smaller company who set up my interview. They had to rush it because I had another offer coming up. I met with about 4 or 5 managers, some still doing hands-on work. The interviews were pretty standard, mostly asking about my resume and past jobs. They also told me about the company and what the work is like, and how I might fit in. It seemed like a pretty normal interview process. The only weird part was when I talked to the chief scientist. He asked about some old work I did that wasn't even related to this job. He did explain why he was asking, and since he's a PhD, I figured he was using it as a teaching moment and to interview me. The craziest thing was that several people, including the general manager, told me I was a great candidate and basically guaranteed an offer in a day or two. But then the next morning, they told me they were still looking for someone with broader experience. It was really disappointing because they had just told me how good a fit I was. I'm giving this a negative review just because I felt misled. They could have just said no without all the praise and then not offered the job.

I talked with two people, one in person and one on the phone. They first told me about the type of person they need for the job, and then I shared how my background fit what they were looking for. We had a really good back-and-forth the whole time. They were super open and seemed genuinely interested. The interview wrapped up with me meeting the division lead and getting a tour of the office. I felt like it went great and was hoping for an offer soon.
