System Design Coding

There were only 2 interviews for the engineering director role. The first was a system design round with the senior engineering director, and the second was a coding round with a senior engineer. The recruiter didn't lead the process, which was unusual. Both interviews were scheduled by the Sr. Engineering director, and no expectations were set for me. It was strange that there weren't any management-related rounds. I'd advise staying away from this company. Based on Glassdoor reviews and my conversations with the CTO and Director, the engineering talent seems average. They let go of many current engineers and were looking for people with software engineering degrees. The senior engineering director, who was also the hiring manager, was impressed with my system design interview. Near the end, he asked about my salary expectations. When I stated my expectation (250k+ for an engineering director), he mentioned they couldn't offer more than $220k. I was ghosted after pretty good interviews, and it was unclear what they were looking for. The job was advertised as an engineering director, but the actual expectation was for the person to do mostly coding. Very strange company and people; they seem to not know what they want and unnecessarily wasted my time.

3 stage interview process. Spoke with the Recruiter, CTO and CHRO. They asked about past roles, industries, and specific roles in tech, especially focusing on cloud and big data technologies. Also discussed employee referral programs and how to sell the brand to potential candidates.

Behavioral Technical Presentation

HR reached out about a week before to set up an initial screening. After that, I asked HR about the next steps and was told about a week, but then I didn't hear back for five weeks. Once they finally got in touch, I was scheduled again with the direct manager with just a few days' notice. This interview had typical questions and included a presentation component about project management. If I advanced, I got a message the next day to schedule a final interview with a PM team member and someone from another department, again with very short notice. It was an in-person interview at their office, which was nice and had a good vibe, but it felt rushed and last-minute because the person interviewing me was changed an hour before. The change itself wasn't an issue, but it showed a pattern in how the company operates. The final interview was friendly, but when I asked about team interaction, the person said the role might not involve working directly with their team. This conflicted with what the direct manager said about the role's responsibilities, making it seem like they were still figuring things out. A key piece of info from the manager was that someone declined the offer because it was a support role, which they emphasized during my interview. This felt like a red flag, and given the timeline, I suspected I was a backup. Things continued to drag on, and after a week of waiting for an update post-final interview, I was told the job was 'on pause due to restructuring.' While there are many assumptions to be made, it felt like a waste of time. They did provide feedback, which was confusing. They said I was a 'people person' but also noted one answer showed a lack of empathy. They also mentioned I should have highlighted project management skills instead of Excel when asked about technical skills, even though the team member I spoke with mentioned using a variety of tools, suggesting a lack of established processes. The questions generally gave me the impression that significant changes were happening, with a strong focus on managing difficult people as the main challenge.

The interview process was quite lengthy and was conducted by Mario Daza. I was contacted months ago, during the process they said they were making internal changes, it took about 8 weeks until a new contact. During the last interview, the head of human resources Ana told me that it was not possible to help me with a visa when from the beginning I was told yes. I felt denigrated and disappointed, they wasted a lot of my time, it is an insult that an international company does not have clear hiring policies.
