First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Talen Energy.
Branding Writer
I was contacted by a HR rep from Talen Energy who encouraged me to apply. Then, we had a 30-minute video call where we discussed the job, and she asked me to send over some samples of my work. The HR rep was nice and professional. However, HR didn't stick to the timeline they gave me for next steps, taking over a week to get back to me. The next step was an interview with the SVP. They initially scheduled it as a video interview, but the SVP suddenly decided to make it in-person. The in-person interview with the SVP involved some strange personal questions, asked in a condescending way, and some remarks that seemed a bit ageist. The interviewer seemed more interested in showing off his past work at another company instead of talking about what he wanted to change at Talen. He seemed really uninterested in the whole process. Over a week after the interview, I got a generic email saying I didn't get the job.
- What would your three best friends say you should start doing, stop doing, and keep doing?
- Do you wade in or jump in when you're at the edge of a body of water?
- Tell me about the best boss you ever had and why, and the worst boss you ever had and why.
Treasury Analyst
I applied and a recruiter sourced me, and they were professional. It took a week for me to meet with the Treasurer and Senior Treasury Manager because they flew down from PA to work/interview me in TX. Both of them interviewed me at the same time. They were good people, but I decided to stop the interview process after the first round. It was clear to me that senior leadership is not acting in the best interest of the employees and might even be misleading them. The company also seems unstable because the VC company that owns it has taken it public and private in the last two years. I think the company will go public again, be acquired, or merge with another company in the next 5 years. I don't believe the VC leadership has the current employees' best interests at heart, which is why I pulled out of the process. I had suspected this before the interview and wanted to investigate further. More research confirmed my suspicions. I also read negative Glassdoor reviews about the company's state under current leadership, and my findings support those reviews. I decided to walk away, which was a tough decision because the experience from this role would have been great. It was just the 'everything else' factor that made me leave. I wanted to investigate the company's stability and leadership's intentions.
- Can you tell me what you know about our company?
- Could you introduce yourself?
- What are your thoughts on using Excel?
Senior Project Manager
The process involved thorough vetting. It was a brief process. They gave a good overview of the company and the job responsibilities. There was a panel interview with several business owners. The interview started on time. Scheduling details were communicated clearly.
- Can you tell us about your background and experience?
- What do you consider to be your greatest strengths and areas for improvement?
- What motivates your interest in this position and our organization?
Contractor
The interview experience was positive. Following an initial conversation with the recruiter, I proceeded to interview directly with the hiring manager. They were approachable, knowledgeable, and transparent about the interview process. Although the decision-making timeline exceeded my expectations, I was ultimately extended an offer.
- Can you provide details about your experience working with a spin-off?
