First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Tacoma Public Utilities.
Research Analyst
I had two panel interviews. The first one was 30 minutes and focused on study design. In between, I had a homework assignment on data/study design. The second interview was 1.5 hours and was mostly behavioral, with a short part about the homework.
- What makes you want to join a mid-size utility company?
Project Manager
I applied online for the R&D Project Manager position, but then got an email inviting me for an in-person interview for a Sr Power Analyst role, which was weird. They skipped the phone screen step entirely. The email mentioned only one day with specific time slots available. When I got there, they handed me a paper with 10 questions for the R&D Project Manager role and gave me about 10-15 minutes to prep my answers. It was a panel interview, and they asked the questions one by one from the paper. The questions were pretty general, designed to learn about my past experience and how it relates to the job. They said they'd contact me about next steps, but I never heard back, not even a rejection email.
- Tell me about your most inspiring projects and what your core competencies are.

Analyst
The interview went as well as I could have hoped. The individuals who conducted the interview, did so over Zoom for a total of 3.5 hours. Every single person was very thoughtful and asked mostly qualitative questions with a short practical assessment during the interview. Overall it was a good experience.
- Can you share an instance where you had a disagreement with a more senior colleague?
Customer Service Representative
I applied in June and got a job performance test in July, finding out I was in the top 10 in early August. About two weeks later, I got a call to schedule a phone interview with the Customer Service Operations Manager. On the same day as that interview, I was called back to set up a panel interview for early the next week. By the end of that week, I got a job offer and will start training in two weeks. The process takes a while but shows they care about applicant quality. The phone interview is 20-30 minutes, with the first half about the role and duties, then 3-4 behavioral questions. The panel interview can be intimidating but consists of the Operations Manager and a supervisor from each dept. (Call Center, Front Office, Back Office). It lasts about 1 hour and is relaxed. Practice is recommended.
- Can you describe a challenging situation you encountered at work and explain your approach to resolving it?
