Software Engineer
I went through a pretty long interview process at Syndio. It started with a take-home test, and then I had a full 8-hour day of interviews. I felt good about the take-home and most of the interviews, but the last one with the potential manager was tough. She asked me to redo parts of my take-home test in just 10 minutes, which felt really demanding, especially since it was at the end of a long day and I'd already done the test. I was tired, so I asked if I could do the changes later that day, and she agreed, though she didn't seem thrilled. I did the changes and sent them in, but I think it affected her decision not to hire me. My advice to others is that this company might take up a lot of your time, and even if you do well, they might not end up hiring you.
- A take home test was assigned.
- Many straightforward questions were asked about the frontend.
- Many straightforward questions were asked about systems design in general.
Solutions Engineer
Started with a chat with the hiring manager about my background and the role. It was pretty chill. Then had a takehome coding challenge, which was simple, involving a basic Python and React web app. After that, I had three 45-minute interviews with different folks. During these, I found out the role wasn't quite what was described before. One interviewer asked a bit about my takehome test, but I didn't get any feedback. The interviews themselves felt a bit scripted and not very engaging, which gave the company a corporate vibe. Got rejected a few days later with no explanation.
- Can you tell me about a significant mistake you've made in a past job?
Software Engineer, Frontend
I had a good time interviewing with Syndio. The recruiter was great at keeping me in the loop and was super responsive. Everyone I talked to was nice and seemed really into their work and what the company is trying to do. I felt like my chats went well and after each interview, I was even more sure I wanted to work there. I kicked things off with a recruiter phone screen, then talked to a frontend engineering manager, did a take-home assignment, and then had 4 more interviews: 2 with frontend engineers, 1 with a product manager, and 1 with a backend engineer. A few days after that last interview, they emailed me to say they went with someone else. I liked that Syndio posted the salary range upfront and that the recruiter discussed salary during the first call. I also appreciated that there wasn't any live coding; I choke under pressure during whiteboard interviews and usually bomb them. The take-home test was a lot more like the actual work I'd be doing. I also liked that most of the people I interviewed with tried to make it more of a relaxed chat than a stiff, formal interview. Syndio seems like a cool place to work, and I'm not mad about not getting an offer. I do wish they could have made a decision between me and the other candidate before I spent so much time researching, doing the take-home, and going through the whole process. But maybe it was a really close call and I was just the runner-up.
- For the take-home test, they give you a design spec and some mock APIs and ask you to implement a dashboard with certain constraints.
- They asked a few more general technical questions about JavaScript concepts like promises.
- They asked a few more general technical questions about JavaScript concepts like async/await.
Human Resources Generalist
The interview experience was disappointing. The initial outreach and first interview were quick. After that, it declined. I was told I'd move to more rounds, but scheduling took weeks, with minimal email responses when I reached out. After the final interview, there was no follow-up. I understand busy schedules, but no communication about not moving forward is a poor candidate experience. Some interviewers were great and asked good questions. The company mission is compelling and impactful. A friend had a similar experience with poor communication and no follow-up after their final interview.
