Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Supermetrics.
Senior Software Developer
I first had a chat with a recruiter on LinkedIn. A few days later, I was sent an email asking me to complete a 3.5-hour technical test. There was no intro to the company or discussion about the role, and no human interaction at all. It felt like a demand for 210 minutes of my time for an arbitrary task done in isolation. The test was timed, and I strongly suspect an AI could pass it. This doesn't seem very relevant for a senior role, but I guess it's a way to filter candidates without wasting their time. I wish I'd checked Glassdoor beforehand to see if it was worth using my Sunday morning.
- Could you refactor this validator code?
- Based on the system diagram provided, where would you suggest implementing a cache layer?
Software Engineer
The interview process seemed a bit questionable for this Lead Software Engineer role at Supermetrics. It started with a 45-minute call that felt like a screener, involving both an internal recruiter and a lead engineer. They were friendly, and the conversation covered culture fit, skills, and experience. I thought it went well and was told my answers to theory questions were very good. However, I was later emailed that they went with another candidate, even though the same job was reposted around the same time and is still open. It makes me wonder if they are genuinely trying to fill the position, especially since it had been open for a while before I applied. I appreciate the recruiter's follow-up, but the whole situation is confusing.
- Can you tell me about your background?
- Do you have answers to some theory questions?
Software Developer
I had a screening call with an HR Specialist, then completed a really good technical assignment that I prepared thoroughly for, followed by a technical interview. The interview itself was theoretical and didn't seem to relate to the technical assignment I had done.
- Can you explain Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) concepts?
- What are the SOLID principles in software design?
- Describe your understanding of PHP fundamentals.
