First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at SUNY Plattsburgh.
Coordinator
Applied and then had a phone interview. After that, it was an on-campus set of interviews with various people including campus partners, supervisor, hiring authority, the search committee, students, HR, and the department. I also did a presentation. There were three calls with my supervisor: one for an introduction, another to check in on my interest, and a final one for the offer conversation. The search was actually extended, so they reached out about my interest again about three months later.
- What makes you interested in this particular institution and role?
Community Advocate
So the whole process has 3 stages. First up is an online submission, which I assume everyone who sends one in gets to move on to the next stage. It's a pretty standard application. Then there's a group interview. This is to check how you work with others and interact since the job is all about people. The last stage is an in-person interview where 3 people will interview you. They'll ask about your role in the college community, how you'd deal with certain situations, and how much you know about the role itself. Make sure to highlight what makes you unique. You don't have to be the perfect fit, just the best version of yourself. The teams are intentionally diverse, so they'd rather you be shy if that's your nature but still be informed about the issues.
- What would you be if you were an item in a fridge?
Marketing Director
The interview process started with a phone interview with a panel of employees who didn't really know the job duties. Then, I had a full day interview on campus with everyone in the department I would work with. If the team worked well together, this wouldn't have been so weird, but you could tell from the first 'panel' interviews that people didn't like each other and were directing that toward me - not sure why, but it was obvious there was internal conflict. The leadership in the department has changed since, so it might be totally different now.
- I was surprised that everyone in the department would see my private application and resume, and also be so involved in hiring me.
Admissions Advisor
The process started with an application where references and official college transcripts were requested. Then there was a phone interview, followed by an on-campus interview that included a presentation. The final step was a brief interview with the Department Director and Assistant Director. The position has a job search board with representatives from admissions, a faculty member, and a student, all of whom asked questions during the phone interview and presentation.
- Could you explain your understanding of diversity?
