Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group.
Software Engineer
It was a three stage interview process. The first stage was a screener where they reviewed my CV and experience. The second stage was technical, involving some short technical questions and a coding exercise. The third and final stage was non-technical and I met with the IT director and a product owner. I noticed their tech stack is outdated, and it felt like they aren't seeking candidates to introduce new technologies or drive changes. Instead, they seem to prefer individuals who are comfortable working with their existing, dated stack. I'm not convinced that candidates are selected purely based on their technical knowledge and experience.

Software Engineer
First, you'll chat with a recruiter over the phone or video. They'll want to get a feel for your background, what you've done, and why you're keen on this gig. Expect to talk about your career path, past projects, and what drew you to this specific opportunity. They might also ask about when you can start and what your salary needs are.
- Can you write some efficient code and walk me through how you thought about it?
- What are your career goals?
- Can you tell me about your previous projects?
Software Engineer
The interview process is pretty straightforward. First, there's an HR interview, followed by two interviews with the manager (VP) and senior manager (SVP). Then, you'll have an interview with the CTO. The interviews with management are technical, while the interviews with the CTO focus more on culture and career goals. All interviews are expected to last about 1-2 hours.
- Can you elaborate on your current experience?
- What technical challenges are you currently encountering?
- What are your career aspirations?
