First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at StyleSeat.
VP of Marketing
The whole thing took about two months and involved 8 interviews. In the end, they told me the role I applied for wasn't available anymore and they were actually looking to create a more junior position. Communication was pretty bad throughout, I always had to chase them for updates because their follow-up times kept changing. It was a disappointing experience overall.
- Can you explain your leadership approach and how you handle a team that isn't meeting expectations?
Product Analyst
The interview process included a 45-minute recruiter call, a 1-hour hiring manager interview, a 45-minute SQL assessment, and final rounds. The recruiter was overly persistent, contacting me without my consent via calls and texts. The hiring manager seemed disengaged and questioned my genuine interest in the position, as did others who asked pointed questions about my commitment.
- Tell me about an analytics case study related to the product.
Senior UX Researcher
I was initially contacted by a recruiter via LinkedIn for the Senior UX Researcher role. The initial phone screen and the materials provided made me interested enough to continue. The interview process involved speaking with 4 people in a 2-hour block: the Hiring Manager, a Product Manager leader, and two potential teammates. While the discussions with leadership aligned with the recruiter's description of the role, the interviews with the practitioners were unexpected. I wasn't prepared for the immediate dive into problem-solving questions, which seemed to differ from management's view of the role. This disconnect, along with a diversity observation where the interview panel didn't reflect the customer base (80% small business owners & POC, while the panel was predominantly white), raised concerns about the company culture.
- Given this spreadsheet of survey results, what insights can you draw about the specified problem? (You'll have 5 minutes to brainstorm during the phone interview.)
Software Engineer
The interview process kicked off with a recruiter chat to get acquainted with StyleSeat. I was initially not super passionate about salon stuff, but the team's synergy, impressive growth, and current user base made StyleSeat an easy decision. Next, a typical Skype coding interview involving an algorithms problem, thankfully not overly academic. They moved fast to set up the onsite after I passed. The onsite was about 5 hours long and included discussions on web knowledge, a front-end interview, another algorithms test, and a web feature architecture discussion. The recruiters were quite approachable and helpful. The final part of the onsite was a conversation with the VP of Engineering, April, who gave great insight into the business's potential and discussed my career aspirations.
