First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Steven Winter Associates.
Building Systems Analyst
It was a four-part process. First, a 30-minute introductory phone call where we talked about me and my familiarity with the job description terms. Then, a 30-minute technical assessment where I had to answer 4 GUI-related questions via email. After that, there was a 1-hour technical interview, followed by a 1-hour interview with the team.
- Can you tell me about yourself?
- How well do you know the terms in the job description?
- How would you answer these 4 questions about a GUI?
Energy Auditor
I applied online to the email listed on their website and got an interview request 12 hours later, which was super fast for a new grad with only 5 months experience. The interview was in a conference room with a VP and two senior engineers/analysts. It started with general questions about my past projects, what I knew about the company, and why I wanted to join them. The VP then jumped in with really specific questions about my experience, like HVAC equipment specs and wall insulation details, which I found pretty rude. He finished with a sarcastic "Thanks for going over your experience with us." The whole thing felt unprofessional, especially given how fast they responded to my resume – maybe they didn't read it closely?
- Could you tell me about the boiler specifications for the project you mentioned?
Sustainability Intern
I talked with a woman about the internship. She asked me some basic questions about making buildings more sustainable or how I've used those concepts in my studies. I got an email a few days later saying they had to cancel the whole internship because of 'unexpected internal changes'.
- Could you introduce yourself and share your background in sustainability?
- What are your thoughts on improving building sustainability?
- Can you give examples of how you've applied sustainability concepts during your academic work?
Energy Engineer
We started with a quick 15-minute phone chat. Then, I had to do a take-home task focused on HVAC knowledge, which for me involved describing an AHU. After that, I had an hour-long interview with two senior engineers. The last interview was with several senior engineers and some people who might be my teammates.
- Can you share details about your previous work experience?
- Explain what an AHU is.
