First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Stella-Jones.
Millwright
I interviewed with the site Manager and production manager. They were professional and all the questions they asked were relevant to the position. Both were really friendly and open about pay, benefits, and working conditions.
- What are your career aspirations for the next five years?
Maintenance Technician
It was short. They asked about my knowledge and punctuation. They advised to be calm and collective. They wanted to know a lot about my family life. It seems like a very good place to work. A drug test is required (they are strict about weed) and a background check that only goes back 7 years.
- When can you start working?
- Do you have your own transportation?
Account Specialist
The interview process started off great with a welcoming HR recruiter who set a positive tone. But then it went downhill after the first interview because I never got any feedback about a second interview even after following up twice. It felt like I was ghosted and it was frustrating because I put time and effort into it. Even a short message about feedback would have been professional and shown they respected my time and interest. Hiring managers should communicate consistently. A quick update or some feedback, no matter how short, would really help make the candidate experience better.
- Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
Millwright/Maintenance Technician
Found the job through a staffing group on LinkedIn, for a 4:30 PM to 3 AM shift. Had a phone interview with them which went well, then scheduled a sit-down interview. Recruiter gave me the company name, plant manager name, supervisor name who would likely be there, and mentioned the HR director might or might not attend. Was told business casual, like a collared shirt and jeans, would be acceptable. Did some research online, finding the posting on their site for 3 months, and 20 days of info on Glassdoor. LinkedIn said 1+ year experience needed, Glassdoor asked for 2+, and the company website asked for 3+. It's a big place, 43 acres, but the office to check in at is at the address provided. Arrived for the interview, and the front desk didn't know about it. I gave the plant manager's name, but he was unavailable, and the HR director was working remotely. I called the supervisor, and thankfully he was aware. They let me borrow some PPE, he picked me up, and drove me a short distance to a small building with a meeting room. Met some other maintenance staff members, everyone was friendly. The interview was with 3 supervisors, in a very relaxed and comfortable setting. They asked typical questions, nothing unexpected if you've done basic prep. Afterwards, I was taken to the break room/locker rooms to let them discuss. Shortly after, I was called back. The plant manager was there, along with another maintenance staff member. Total of 5 people. Again, the questions were standard. Finished up, was taken back to the office to return the PPE, and then I left. The whole thing took a little over an hour. I got the feeling I was a good fit.
