First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Steel Dynamics.
Software Engineer
It was a great experience. I even had the opportunity of meeting the Industry. The interview made me feel that it is a great place to work, healthy environment and the team has a friendly approach.

Electrical Engineer Intern
First, there was an HR screen to arrange an in-person interview. Then, I had one round with an engineering supervisor, followed by another with the engineering manager. The first round covered my resume and some basic electrical engineering questions. The second round was even more straightforward, a casual chat with the manager to see if I'd be a good fit.
- Are you familiar with Ohm's law?
Loader/Unloader
It took about a month from when I applied to get an email saying they wanted me to come in for testing. The test was pretty simple but it was timed and they definitely made me rush it. About a week later I got an email for the first in-person interview. This interview consisted of interviewing with 3 separate groups back-to-back from different areas of the facility. I was emailed the following day for my second interview the following week. I interviewed with 2 more people and after that, they offered me the job. Everyone was very friendly throughout the whole process.
- Can you tell me about your biggest weakness in a work environment?
Program Analyst
The job was for a Programme Analyst. It sounded like a jack of all trades role, focusing on leadership and not programming initially. The interview process started with a 30-minute HR phone interview. Then, there was a long in-person panel interview (2.5 hours) where they emphasized hiring for culture fit over skills, saying skills could be taught and they needed a leader for an infrastructure position. After this, I got four online assessments: personality, leadership, and other soft skills. A few days later, I took three online skills assessments for programming and project management. A few days after that, I had more panel interviews, this time for about four hours with the plant GM, controller, engineers, and another programmer. They said I'd hear back in two weeks. I didn't get direct feedback, but my recruiter heard they wanted someone with more programming skills. The position was then pulled and reposted as a more programmer-focused role.
- Can you share your strengths?
- What are your weaknesses?
- Could you tell us about some projects you've worked on?
