First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at State of Oregon.
Project Manager
it's a multi-step evaluation for both of us, usually starts with screening applications and phone screens, then we do initial interviews to check basic qualifications. Later, we have more in-depth interviews, like behavioral or technical ones, group interviews, and meetings with different team members to check skills and culture fit. Finally, we make a decision and let you know.
- The interviewer will ask about your work history, experience, and skills to see if you can do the job and fit the company culture.
Water Analyst
It was a standard state interview with a panel, including one lead and a few other people. They rotated who asked the questions to make it more interesting. Mostly, they asked about your experience with skills relevant to the job and scored you on it. It felt like a one-way conversation, almost like you could pre-record it. The only time you could talk was to ask clarifying questions.
- Can you share an instance where you used data analysis to inform decisions or allocate resources? What methods did you employ, and what was the outcome?
Case Manager
They give you 8-10 questions on a paper just 15 minutes before the interview. I did write memory prompts but failed to tell about the incidents fully S.T.A.R. style. Need full note prompts because I have decades of experiences to pull from. This style feels not authentic and doesn't leave time to decide if the work culture is right for me. ODHS does a way better job interviewing than most other SOO agencies.
- Tell me about how you maintain organization in your case management duties.
- Can you share an instance where your integrity was challenged, and how you resolved it to continue working effectively with the involved individual?
Compensation and Benefits Manager
They sent 5 interview questions 30 min prior to the interview which gave me time to prep. There was a panel of 8 people on a video interview. They didn't ask me any questions at all. They just wanted me to read my answers. At the end of the interview they asked if I wanted to review or add to any of my answers. I would suggest preparing an opening statement of introduction. They really didn't give any feedback.
- Can you share an instance where you identified a performance issue with a manager you supervised? Describe your management approach and how you assisted that manager in improving their job performance.
- Describe a situation where you had to address a performance issue with a manager you supervised. Explain your strategy for managing performance and the steps you took to help them succeed in their role.
