You gotta take this NYS exam first. Then, if you get canvass letters in the mail, fill them out and send 'em back. If they pick you, you might have a roundtable interview with like half the people in the department. It's kinda weird though, they might ask you questions totally unrelated to the job description, even if you have other skills. Like, I was supposed to do basic stuff like presentations and recording UPK, but they asked me tester/software engineer questions. It felt like I was interviewing for a project assistant role but they were asking me tester stuff.

It's the typical civil service route: take an exam, score high, get a canvass letter, then a call. After that, you drive all the way across the state for an interview. They only give you about 15 minutes, and it feels like they've already decided who to hire. It seems like they go with a political connection or a retired cop already collecting a hefty pension, which actually breaks civil service law. They appear to selectively follow the law, and you have no way to fight it. Complaining will get you blacklisted from that department forever, which is also illegal.
