First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at State Farm.
Actuarial Intern
It was a simple behavioral interview with questions about yourself and your resume. They asked about leadership, teamwork, and handling multiple deadlines. They want to see that you're a good team player. There were also some 'fun' questions like what celeb you'd want to have dinner with.
- Can you describe a situation where you had to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously and explain how you handled it effectively?
- Tell me about a time you had to balance multiple deadlines. How did you manage it?
- What is your approach to effectively handling multiple deadlines at once?
Actuarial Analyst
The interview process was pretty unique since it included a project. Coding skills were pretty important, so I'd suggest brushing up on that beforehand. Sadly, I didn't make it past the initial, non-face-to-face stages. My experience was mainly with the project and those automated questions where you record yourself answering. I personally prefer face-to-face interviews with a real person, you know, for that human connection during the process.
- Can you fix this R code error?
Actuarial Manager
The interview process was very systematic and well executed. It started with a Hirevue interview, followed by an HR conversation to set expectations and discuss salary requirements. Then, I interviewed with two actuarial executives. The final round included interviews with potential peers, the hiring manager, and business partners. A great part of the final round was a job shadow with potential peers, where they showed me some of their daily tasks, systems, and processes. This was the best interview process I've experienced. I had ample time to ask questions and gained a good understanding of the team's structure and how it operates. A downside was that it wasn't clear which specific team or product line the role would support. Also, the initial job offer was $15k below my minimum salary expectation, and even the final offer didn't meet it. My suggestion is to include the salary range in the job posting or state upfront if a candidate's expectations are too high.
- How would you describe your leadership style?
