First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at State College of Florida.
Advancement Associate
I was asked to create a slideshow for a new event proposal in under a week. The slideshow had a whole page of requirements. The interview itself was fine, but they kept calling me afterwards for more questions.
- Please rank the following events from most to least expensive: a business event, a wedding, and a nonprofit event.
Adjunct Faculty
The interview had fair questions, great follow-up, and they set realistic expectations for potential hires. The interviewer was really friendly and clearly explained what the college needed and if my background fit those needs.
- How do you approach making tough decisions?
Administrative Support
I applied online and interviewed with the department directors 3 days later. The interview went well and my former supervisor told me they contacted her for a reference and said that I was their top candidate. One week later I received a call from a human resources representative who said she just had a few questions. The call turned out to be a one hour grueling interrogation with her insisting that I list my shortcomings and weaknesses in former jobs. When I indicated a few minor ones she said ' oh everybody does that' and she kept insisting I list more weaknesses, or examples of where supervisors said I needed improvement on performance evals in the past 10 years. I told her that I could not even remember that far back, that nothing stood out. Any response I gave was not acceptable, and it seemed as though she was intentionally trying to eliminate me. I eventually provided some personal weaknesses just to end the interrogation.
- Normal questions about my qualifications for the job were asked.
- The follow up phone call from HR was only directed at demanding that I indicate weaknesses/shortcomings other than minor ones.
Assistant Professor
I applied and heard back about 3 months later. First, I had a phone interview with the committee. Each committee member asked one question they had prepared. Within a week, they invited me for an on-campus interview which included a 15-minute teaching demo. Although they said I'd hear back in a week, it actually took about 3 weeks.
- Could you provide a specific instance where you demonstrated creativity in a professional setting?
