Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Starwood Capital.
Analyst
This interview involved several meetings with various team members. Each person gave a detailed, somewhat repetitive explanation of the job. The process ended with a lengthy Excel test. Not a great experience overall.
- Can you tell me why you are interested in Starwood?
- What specifically interests you about the IR team?
Analyst
I got this job through a referral and went through several interview rounds. There was also an Excel test. Unfortunately, I was cut in the 4th round. The people I met were all nice and the HR team was very communicative.
- Calculate the internal rate of return (IRR) given multiple cash flows.
Summer Analyst
There were 4 rounds in total. I met each team member during the process. Some interviews were 2-on-1. It was a bit technical, so I had to brush up on typical Real Estate Private Equity (REPE) questions. I needed to be ready for NOI math, valuation methods, and have an investment thesis ready because they might ask for it.
- What factors could cause two identical buildings to have different values?
- Explain the concept of NOI.
- Describe various methods used for real estate valuation.
