First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Star Mountain.
Intern
My interview experience with Star Mountain Capital was really bad and unprofessional. From the beginning, the interviewer was distracted and not engaged, showing no interest. They were doing other things and not really present, making it hard to have a good talk. Also, the interviewer asked questions that didn't match the job I applied for, making me wonder if they even looked at my background. It felt like they were just going through the motions without really trying to see if I was qualified or a good fit. To make it worse, the whole interview felt rushed. The interviewer wanted to finish quickly instead of doing a proper assessment. This showed a lack of professionalism and made me doubt the company's seriousness about hiring the right people. Overall, the interview left a bad feeling, and if this is how they work, I'd tell candidates to look at other places before applying to Star Mountain Capital.
- Can you explain the case study you worked on?
- What attracts you to private equity?
Investment Intern
The interview process was pretty informative. If you put in the effort and do your homework, you should do well. They were more focused on whether you'd be a good culture fit than on super technical skills. It's important to show them you're eager to learn.
- Can you explain how private equity firms generate revenue?
Investor Relations Marketing
It was 4 interviews in total. The first was like an informational interview with an intern who talked about their experience. Then I had 2 interviews with analysts, but one of them was unprepared, seemed uninterested, and was texting during our chat, which was weird. The third interview went well, mostly discussing what Star Mountain is like. The last interview was a review of everything I'd learned and some behavioral questions. All the interviews were purely behavioral, no technical stuff. They took 11 days to get back to me after the last interview, which felt like too long of a wait. Overall, the people were nice, and the company operates in a really niche area and is pretty small. There were some odd rumors online about the CEO, but they didn't seem too concerning. They expect you to commit to staying with the company for 2-3 semesters, not just a summer or fall term.
- How are your time management skills?
- What draws you to private equity?
- Are you open to advancing within the company long-term?
Associate
I applied online and a few weeks later they got back to me with a questionnaire. After I finished the assignment, they had me come in for an in-person interview. I thought it went pretty well, but the hiring manager never replied to my two follow-up emails. It's been over a month and I'm pretty sure I didn't get the job. I'm rating this experience as negative because of the lack of communication - if you meet with someone, you should at least let them know if you're not moving forward.
