Assistant Manager
I applied online on a Friday and got a request for a phone interview, which I scheduled for Tuesday. The phone screen went well, and they said I was moving on to the next round, a virtual interview scheduled for Friday at 10 am. I received the invite at 12:43 pm on Tuesday. Then, at 2:01 pm on Tuesday, they sent a cancellation and what looked like a new invite, but it didn't have a new time or a calendar invite. I contacted the HR person to ask for a new time, but she didn't give me one, just said 'interview update.' Friday came, and I tried to get on the call, but no one was there. This was unprofessional, the first time I've seen this when interviewing for jobs. Red Flag.

Manager
It started with a recruiter finding my resume online and asking to pass it to Staples HR, which I agreed to. Then, an HR person called me within a week and asked general questions about my resume, management experience, and customer service. They said they'd call me back if interested. About two weeks later, the District Manager contacted me to set up a one-on-one interview at a store. During this interview, he really dug into my resume, asking about my high school, extracurriculars, and my very first job. I think they were evaluating both my personality and my management skills. I left feeling really good about it because I'm proud of my background.
- Can you tell me about your favorite subjects in high school?
- What activities did you enjoy outside of school?
- What was your role within that group or activity?
Manager
It was irritating. The interview felt like it went okay, but then the recruiter asked about jobs I hadn't listed on my resume. I was honest and mentioned a part-time job at a video store and a paper route from when I was a kid, because I didn't think my teenage jobs were relevant to my current career. The vibe of the interview changed immediately. The recruiter was shaking her head and wanted super detailed questions about these old jobs, like why I left, who my manager was, how to contact them, and my performance. I left feeling like I was accused of lying because I wasn't ready to talk about part-time work I did when I was 16, even though I'm in my 30s now.
