It was pretty laid-back, mostly just checking if I met the student assistant requirements. This included having 6 credit hours per semester, being available to work 15 hours weekly, and basically that's all. The interviewer wanted to confirm I'd stay for at least a semester, to avoid frequent hiring and training. She also proposed volunteering in the lab for a couple of weeks to get a feel for the environment. She did mention that some individuals struggle with the chemicals, which makes lab work difficult for them.

It took quite a while to get through the hiring process. I heard back about a week after applying, but the actual interview didn't happen until nearly three months later. They sent me a list of things to bring, including a PowerPoint presentation I needed to create and some examples of my past instructional design work. The interview itself involved a three-person panel, and I had to give a presentation on customer service first.

Technical Presentation

So I had to take this written test first, it was pretty simple and covered different math topics. Then the actual interview started, and they had me explain the questions from that test. The whole interview thing isn't super hard, it really just comes down to how you answer and if your answers are right. Also, how clear you are when you explain things, because that's important for tutoring actual students.

I had a good experience interviewing with SPC. Everyone was kind, polite, and welcoming. For an Instructional Support Specialist position at the Writing Center, they interviewed me in a panel discussion, but it was never stressful and I always felt comfortable. They then asked me to review a sample essay and demonstrate how I would give feedback as a tutor.
