I got an invitation for a 30-min interview with HR, which was pretty light and basic questions about my background and why I applied for the job. Salary for Associate Editor (with PhD) is 55K and no negotiation. For a company with the 2nd highest revenues among scientific journals, that's not the best paid job. You also have to go to the office twice a week and no negotiation about that either. As the recruiter told me, even though most of the team live/work in different cities and meetings are online, you don't have the flexibility to choose your own work-from-home days. A week later, I was asked to pick a paper in the field and write a 'research highlight' of no more than 500 words. I worked on it and submitted it. I was ghosted for a month until I received the same invitation for a 30-min job interview. The recruiter was about to ask me the same questions as before when I reminded him we'd already had this interview. He seemed unprepared and disorganized. Very disappointing.

The interview started with some common questions about handling difficult clients and unexpected tasks, plus some technical questions on medical publishing, clinical trials data, and review processes. Then, I had about half an hour to complete three tasks: writing an email to a head editor about author complaints, proofreading a clinical trials factsheet, and prioritizing a list of 8 tasks with an explanation. It's been a week and I haven't heard back yet.
