First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at SpotX.
QA Engineer
It was 100% remote. The first interview was just a phone call with someone from the hiring team. They asked the usual questions like 'where do you see yourself in 5 years' and 'Why QA?'. The second phone call was with the head of QA and it got a bit more technical. They asked about terminal/command prompt commands, the difference between black box and white box testing, explanations of unit/functional and integration testing, what CI/CD is, and when I've used it. You definitely need to be able to talk about testing.
- Can you explain what CI and CD are?
Software Quality Engineer
Applied online and heard back from a recruiter within three days. Had a phone interview with the recruiter the next week, covering experience and motivation. Then, a phone interview with the VP and team members, where introductions were minimal and I wasn't always sure who was asking questions. I asked about next steps and was told a decision would be made and the recruiter would update me that day or the next. After five days of no response, I emailed and left a voicemail. Soon after the voicemail, I got a generic rejection email from the 'Recruiting Team'. While people were nice, the third-party recruiting tool used for emails makes me unsure if my follow-ups were received. Given the three weeks of communication, I expected a more personal rejection than what's sent to people who don't even get screened.
- Can you list and explain basic Linux commands for command-line operations?
QA Engineer
First, I talked to a recruiter over the phone. Then, I had a phone interview where they asked about my technical background. After that, I went for an on-site which consisted of four interviews over three hours. The first three were with six QA engineers, covering technical and personal questions (none of that 'what's your greatest weakness' stuff, thankfully). The final interview was with the head of QA, who threw out some brain teasers to see how I'd approach problems and discussed how the company and team operate and where I could fit in.
