First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Sphero.
Senior Firmware Engineer
I applied online and heard back about 2.5 weeks later for a phone screen. The first step was an HR phone screen, which was a bit unexpected because they focused heavily on values like inclusion, collaboration, and teamwork, alongside some typical behavioral questions for about 15 minutes. They also asked about my definition of inclusion and why I'm interested in Sphero. I got positive feedback the next day and scheduled a video interview with the hiring manager within a few days. This was a two-sided conversation with a mix of behavioral and experience-based questions, like debugging tough problems. I learned a lot about the daily work, and the hiring manager thought I was a good fit. Same-day positive feedback from HR led to scheduling a team video interview for the following week. This 45-60 minute Zoom call included three interviewers from the firmware team (one EE and two Firmware engineers). The next step after this was either an offer or a decline, but due to vacations, they needed more time and I'd hear back in two days.

Marketing
A recruiter reached out on Linkedin and I responded. We connected quickly and after talking, I had a phone interview with the hiring manager, which was also set up fast. It went well, and I was told the next step was a Skype chat with other team members. A week later, I followed up. The recruiter said it would likely take another week. A couple more weeks passed, it was the holiday season, and I reached out again. I was told they'd know more and let me know after people were back. It's been about 1.5 months since our last chat and I haven't heard anything. While I get that things slow down for the holidays, I don't like being ghosted.
- How crucial is collaboration with the Sales Team?
Build and Release Engineer
I was given a tour of the office and then met with 5 groups of people, with 1-2 individuals from each team. Each team presented some of the challenges they're facing and asked for my input on how I'd tackle them. I also had plenty of time to ask questions about the company. It was a really casual interview, and everyone in the office seemed super friendly.
- Have you had any experience with Unity?
- Have you ever been involved in building and deploying mobile applications?
- Can you describe how you would automate the testing process for an embedded device?
Software Engineer
The interview process included two phone interviews, each about 30 minutes long. The first was with the hiring manager, and the second was with the head of the software team. They asked mostly about my past experience and projects. A few questions were about the courses I was taking and what made me interested in this job. It took about a month to hear back.
- Can you describe any checks and balances you employ during your coding process?
- What are some checks and balances you use while coding?
