Speechify Android Engineer Interview Questions
& Process

After submitting my resume and application, I was sent an email for a coding challenge. I received access to a repository containing an Android project. This project already had a model and repository layer set up, which provided a list of books and individual book details by ID. My task was to build a screen to display this list of books, allowing users to filter them and view details when clicked. I used MVVM with Jetpack Compose and its navigation, exposing StateFlows for screen states. Despite having only 60 minutes, I was rejected. They mentioned they liked my skills and wanted to offer another chance, citing their use of AI and an assessment they built around AI in the role, which I found unprofessional.

The interview process started with an HR screening which was about an hour long, covering typical behavioral questions. This was followed by two technical interviews, each lasting 45 minutes. The first technical interview involved a list-details task that, while not overly difficult, was quite time-consuming and had minimal library support. The second technical interview focused on concurrency using coroutines and Flow. Finally, there was a brief 15-minute chat with the Engineering Manager.

The Speechify interview journey had a few steps. First, there was a screening call to chat about my background and the gig. The tech interviews were pretty cool, tough but fun, and they really let me show what I can do with some practical problems. After that, I talked with some of the team members, which was neat and gave me a feel for the company vibe and how the team operates. The whole thing felt pretty decent and complete, like I got a good sense of whether I'd fit with what Speechify is going for.
