First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Special School District of St. Louis County.
Sign Language Interpreter
I submitted my online application, and after several months without a response, I reached out to an area coordinator via email. This led to an immediate interview. The HR system seemed to struggle connecting candidates with the right people. My interview involved answering some situational questions, a brief chat, and a 10-minute signing and voicing video. These parts were straightforward. It took about a month to hear back, and I was offered a start date of the very next day, requiring me to give my current employer two weeks' notice. The initial two-day orientation was fast-paced. While the HR system felt disorganized, the process became more professional once I moved past HR and into my assigned school.
- Can you describe how you would manage a specific scenario?
Speech Language Pathologist
It was tough figuring out where the openings were. I got through the initial screening but then was placed in a general 'pool.' The districts were supposed to reach out for interviews, but I had to follow up myself with the screener (SLP EPS) to get information and see if there were still openings. This was surprising because once I was hired, I saw how many positions were available, and getting an interview was hard. I was well-qualified, and after I did some digging myself and found some leads, I got a few interviews that were more straightforward.
- Can you tell us about your strengths and weaknesses?
Teaching Assistant
After applying online, there was a recruiter call. Then, candidates are placed in a pool and Area Coordinators reach out. Most of the interviews were panel interviews with multiple schools (elementary to high school). I was interviewed by four schools, and one of them conducted a phone interview. Following that, I received a job offer. HR contacted me to discuss pay, and I selected my preferred school based on the offers received.
- Can you share some of your experiences working with children with disabilities?
- Could you provide an example of a time you helped a child achieve success?
Support Specialist
The whole process takes a really long time. I applied back in January and didn't start hearing from them until late March. Then, there's a 3-step interview process: first, you talk to a specialist, then an HR phone interview, and finally, you interview with the schools that contact you. It's been a bit of a mess. It's now mid-May and I'm still interviewing with schools, so it's been 5 months in total.
- What's your approach to handling a disruptive child in a classroom setting?
