The interview was very straightforward and felt quite bureaucratic. Three interviewers took turns asking questions. Two of them were physically present, and one joined online. They documented my answers on paper. Most questions focused on customer service skills rather than permitting or technical content.

So, the first interview was a panel of 3 people on Zoom. It was pretty tough, and they hit me with 13 questions, most of them situational. Definitely something to prep for. Then, the second interview was in person, another 3-person panel with two new folks. They asked another 13 questions, but it felt a bit more chill this time, mostly about getting to know me and how I handle things. After they offered me the job, I had to do a background check, send in official transcripts, my driving history, and provide 3 references.

The hiring manager will call you first to give you the lowdown on the position and see if you're interested. If it looks like a good fit, they'll set up an interview with you, the hiring manager, and some of your potential colleagues or other managers. Most of the questions will be about how you'd handle different situations. If they offer you the job, be ready to negotiate your salary – pretty much all salaries are up for discussion, except for some temporary hourly roles.

I applied online through the South Carolina e-Recruitment website. After sending in my resume, the hiring manager reached out to set up an interview. The first interview was pretty standard, asking about my strengths and weaknesses, my past job experiences, and my reasons for wanting to join the Department of Health and Environmental Control. About a week later, I heard back from the hiring manager for a second interview. This one dug deeper into specifics about the role, like asking me to talk about what I know regarding pulp and paper manufacturing plants, plywood plants, and batch chemical plants.
