Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Solar Turbines.
Mechanical Engineer Intern
First, I had a phone call with a recruiter, and they talked about the internship program and some logistics. After that, I had a panel interview with a few engineers who have different levels of experience. They asked me behavioral questions and some questions about my resume.
- Can you share an example of a time you worked on a team and describe how you managed that situation? (examples can come from club projects, internships, or class projects)
Mechanical Engineer
I had a quick one-on-one interview with them in person after meeting them at a career fair. They seemed like really kind people and genuinely cared about their employees from what I could tell.
- Can you tell me about the projects you have worked on?
- Describe a situation where you learned a lesson from a project you were involved in.
- Talk about a time you worked effectively as part of a team.
Mechanical Engineer
I interviewed at a career fair, with a standard 2-on-1 interview. Both interviewers asked about my past experiences and typical interview scenarios. The interview lasted about 1 hour and 15 minutes. About 3-4 months later, I had a phone interview with the program manager where we discussed my resume. A week after that, I was invited for an on-site interview. This interview was an all-day event where I met with different team managers. They asked me personal questions and technical questions specific to their departments. I was then asked to give a prepared 1-hour technical presentation to the whole engineering team, followed by a tour of the facility. I received an offer about 5-6 weeks after the on-site. The entire process from the first interview to the offer took 4-5 months, so it's good to be patient if you don't hear back right away.
- Could you give a 1-hour technical lecture to a group of engineering managers and PhDs?
