First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at SOFIE.
Lab Technician
I applied on the company website and was contacted by an HR Coordinator in Virginia a few days later. My first interview was a brief phone screening with the HR Coordinator via Teams. After that, I had an interview with the manager, also on Teams. She asked a lot of questions about the job and other things. Her accent was quite strong, making it difficult to understand her at times. She mentioned she would contact me to schedule an in-person interview. About two weeks went by, so I reached out to the HR Coordinator again. He assured me I was still being considered and that the manager would contact me once all interviews were finished. However, I never heard back from either of them again. I was ghosted.
- Can you describe your previous work experience?
- What is your educational background?
- When are you available to speak with the manager?
Cyclotron Engineer
The interview process took about 1.5 months and included an onsite visit. The third-party recruiter initially gave a very positive spin, but the onsite revealed a different reality regarding the shift schedule (Sunday-Thursday nights with on-call and Saturdays, no overtime) and salary increases (a veteran hadn't had a raise in 3 years). Despite promises of yearly raises, the recruiter was hesitant to put the hours in writing. When the possibility of working weekends was requested in writing, their tone changed. Ultimately, after I followed up, they informed me they had moved on with another candidate.
- How has your past experience prepared you for this position?
Carer
I logged onto Zoom for my interview, and after waiting until my scheduled time, the interviewer joined. They asked me a lot about what I was looking for in a new role and my previous experience.
