First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at SoFi.
Software Engineer
First up was a recruiter screen over the phone, lasted about 30 minutes, and was all about understanding SoFi's values. Then, there were two technical rounds, each with a staff engineer, and each lasting an hour, where they hit me with multiple DSA questions. Following that, I had a round with the hiring manager, which was more of a light technical discussion mixed with a deep dive into business processes. Finally, there was a round with the Director.
- Can you share an instance where you encountered a conflict with a manager?
- Describe your experience collaborating cross-functionally and with different engineering teams in a software engineering setting.
Software Engineer
The interview process included a system design round where I had to design a competitor to AWS for billing virtual machine usage, focusing on real-time and monthly billing. Then there were two coding rounds. The first coding round had an easy question about anagrams and word pair transformations, and a second question about dividing gold bars to minimize the amount given to a friend. The second coding round asked for the smallest 'clean' subarray (at least k distinct numbers). Finally, there was a hiring manager round with questions about past projects, communication strategies for roadblocks and feature negotiation for MVPs, handling project failures, and designing a metrics/logs collection and search system.
- Tell me about your previous projects.
- How do you communicate roadblocks to stakeholders?
- How do you negotiate features for MVP launches?
Software Engineer
I had a really bad experience interviewing with this company. I passed the online assessment with a perfect score on both coding questions. The recruiter told me they were moving forward and would set up the onsite interviews. But instead of onsite interviews, I got another technical screening two days later. I decided to give it a shot and did the screening. My interview went well; I solved the problem efficiently, passed all test cases, and answered all technical questions. The interviewer seemed pleased. A week later, the recruiter called and said there were issues with the HackerRank system, causing it to pass test cases incorrectly, and so they weren't moving forward. This is weird because when I took the OA, I solved both questions and had to fix some initial test case failures. I'd heard rumors that they only hire people from Amazon or Microsoft, which says a lot about the company and its culture. It was a very disappointing and unprofessional experience.
- Questions about string parsing and frequency counting.
