First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at SOCOM.
Operations
There were really tough physical and mental tests. They did a lot of background checks. They also looked at what you've done in the military and Special Operations. A panel of higher-ranking enlisted folks or officers did the assessing.
- What motivated your application for this role?
Program Manager
Had a phone call with 3 people on the line. Each asked different questions. They just asked the question, got the answer, and moved on to the next. No discussion about the job or what it's like to work at USSOCOM. Really direct and simple in how it was done and what was asked.
- Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager and how you managed that situation.
- What would you do if an employee under your supervision started to underperform unexpectedly?
Division Chief
I applied online and filled out a questionnaire. Then, I was offered an interview slot. The interview began with a 7-question list that I had to answer in 25 minutes or less, plus I had to sell myself to a panel of three managers. It felt rushed and awkward, with very little back-and-forth; I pretty much talked for 24 minutes to cover all 7 questions. It seemed unprofessional and pointless, like they had already picked someone and this was just a formality for credibility.
- What would you do in a given situation?
Division Chief
Once your resume is picked from a bunch of applicants, the interview process begins. You'll get the potential questions a day before to look over and help you get your answers ready. The interview happens either in person or over the phone with a group of 3-4 interviewers.
- Can you share an instance where you faced a difficult workplace situation? Describe how you managed it and the reasoning behind your approach.
