Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Sno-Isle Libraries.
Public Services Assistant
You'll be meeting with a panel of 3 interviewers. They mentioned they're moving away from using STAR format exclusively. They sent out questions 30 minutes before the interview, and you're supposed to delete the document and email it after reading. This interview was a bit tougher than average.
- Can you give an overview of your customer interaction experience?
- Tell me about some of your experiences interacting with your team.
- What are your perspectives on equity, diversity, and inclusion?

I interviewed at their service center, right next to the freeway in Marysville. They review applications for this position every 60 days. They asked 15 behavioral questions that weren't relevant to my library experience, even though I've worked or volunteered in libraries for the last 10 years. This made it hard to discuss my relevant experience. I've interviewed with them four times for different roles, and this one felt the most challenging. The interview questions are becoming discouraging, even though I'm qualified or overqualified, because they're so frustrating. Behavioral questions are more about who can tell the best story on the spot, not everyone has had experiences that fit. There's no way to prepare, and the questions have never been the same.
- Share an instance where you commended a colleague for their excellent work.

I had volunteered at my local branch for a few years, the employees there are really kind. I actually interviewed for this same position at the same location two different years. It was just one interview with the branch manager and hiring manager in the same room. They did a behavioral interview and gave me a test on ordering/ranking different call numbers. My mistakes for you to learn from: Take a second to think of your answer. Don't rush through your answer. Provide examples in your answers depending on the question. You are allowed to take notes. Not sure if I would encourage it though.
- Can you describe an instance where you utilized a filing system?
- How do you approach setting and achieving goals?
- What motivates you to complete tedious tasks?
Public Service Assistant
So, for this Public Service Assistant job, you gotta send in your resume and cover letter, but also answer like 4-6 essay questions based on your past experience. Then, there's an interview that's about an hour long where they hit you with a bunch of STAR format questions. Getting the interview scheduled was kind of a pain, felt like they were disorganized. They ask a lot with the application and interview for a part-time receptionist/greeter type role, but I get they get tons of apps and need to filter. Also felt like they expected more experience than what was actually posted.
- Can you share an instance of working with a difficult customer and how you handled it?
- Tell me about a time you had to be adaptable in a previous role.
- Describe your previous customer service experience.
