First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at SMX.
Analyst
Had a dynamic interview with the sales manager, operational director, and operational lead. I was well-received, and the people were polite, but they took a while to get back to me about whether I was approved or not. After about two weeks, they contacted me back. They were polite and cordial.
- Tell me about your experience
Software Engineer
We did a phone screening first, then a 1 hour cultural/behavioral chat, followed by a 1 hour technical interview. In the technical part, they really dug into my past projects, asking for details about their architecture and what I knew about various programming concepts and paradigms.
- Regarding communication between microservice X and microservice Y, what led to the decision to implement RESTful APIs?
Accounts Payable Specialist
The recruiter contacted me for a team meeting. She seemed enthusiastic about me interviewing with the team. However, when I met the team, the atmosphere felt different. The hiring manager and team lead didn't seem friendly, particularly the larger team lead who had to force a smile. Their negative energy suggested they weren't open to hiring an African American for their team. What upset me is they misrepresented my answers, claiming the recruiter said my responses didn't make sense. I have extensive experience in nearly every aspect of Accounts Payable and can discuss my background. It seems like their decision was made upon seeing me, but it's for the best since the offered salary is much lower than I'm worth.
- Do you have prior experience working remotely?
IP Flow/Network Flow Intelligence Analyst
Got a cold call about the IP Flow/Network Flow Intelligence Analyst role. After they explained it briefly, I said I was interested and took a phone interview. The phone interviews were pretty awkward; it felt like nobody really knew what the job was about or who they were looking for. The Project Manager and the customer had totally different ideas about the job's scope. I ended up having three hour-long phone interviews over three weeks. It was weird because it felt like I was interviewing for three different jobs each time! After the last one, they said they were super impressed and would let me know about next steps. It's been a month, and I've heard nothing. Total waste of time. This company really doesn't seem to have the technical chops to properly interview for technical roles.
- What's the WiFi range like in a maritime setting?
