Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at SMS International Shore Operations.
Pier Agent
It was a pretty easy process, although they sometimes take a while to get back to you, like a week or two. But the paperwork and scheduling were straightforward. Overall, it was a good experience.
- Do you have any customer service experience?
Pier Agent
I applied online and about a week later, I got an email from SMS. They wanted to meet online using Word meetings, so I had a meeting with a manager from pier 91 in seattle. It was a really short meeting and then I got the job.
- Can you describe your availability?
- What led you to apply for this role?
Pier Agent
I went to an open interview and there were a lot of people there. I had to wait 2 hours to talk to someone. The interviewer, Keon, was really nice and helpful. She explained the job well. The job would be cool, like greeting people and helping them get on and off the cruise ship. But my problem is with the costs before starting at SMS. You have to pay $125.25 for a TWIC ID and a Port of Miami ID. Then the uniform is another $130. So for $250, they're offering to pay $9.50 per hour for this part-time job? It will take about 25 hours of work just to pay for the starting costs. I was so surprised by the cost for a job that pays barely more than minimum wage. It doesn't seem right to charge people these things when the wage is so low.
- Have you ever been convicted of a crime?
- Are you able to purchase the required IDs immediately?
Check-in Agent
It was pretty simple, they wanted to make sure you were the right fit for the job in the first place, so they were careful with who they hired, and also if there was a way to move you around if needed, to whatever fits.
- What is your availability for the season?
