First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Smith Optics.
AR Lead
Had 3 interviews: HR, Manager, and a Senior employee. They were all 30-minute phone calls. It was pretty relaxed, just to see if I'd fit with the team. Everyone was really friendly.
- Can you walk me through your typical day-to-day tasks?
- Tell me about a time you resolved an issue.
- How do you approach team management?
Sales Manager
The interview process was lengthy, involving more than 8 interviews, primarily with individuals at Safilo. Communication regarding follow-ups or subsequent steps was slow, sometimes taking weeks or even months. The main challenge of the process was its length and the number of people involved, compounded by the time zone difference between Portland and Italy.
- Can you discuss your experience in managing teams?
- How would you describe your management approach?
Transportation Manager
Things seemed promising at first. I got through the initial HR screening, the hiring manager interview, and even met with executive management. Then, the process hit a snag. The HR rep who was handling things suddenly quit without giving any notice or properly handing over my application to their replacement. I was informed that the hiring process was being put on hold and that I'd be updated when they were ready to restart. After that, I heard nothing. I followed up four times with the team, but ultimately, I had to move on to other opportunities.
- Can you describe your background in import logistics and what unique contributions you believe you can make to our team?
Finance Manager
The whole experience was pretty bad. I felt like they were super disrespectful and I had to wait ages between interviews without any updates. Took them almost two weeks just to reject me, and the hiring manager couldn't even tell me themselves, they had an external recruiter do it. So, it started with a recruiter screening, then I talked to the manager about why Smith, some behavioral and technical stuff like how to analyze company performance against budget. After that, I had an interview with the GM where we discussed why Smith again and my cross-functional experience. Finally, I interviewed with the Sales VP, again covering why Smith and my cross-functional background.
- What's your approach to analyzing how the company's performance stacks up against the budget?
- Why are you interested in Smith?
- Can you describe your experience collaborating with different departments?
