First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Skillz.
Strategy Associate
It started with a recruiter reaching out on LinkedIn. Then I had an initial HR screen to talk about the job and pay. After that, I spoke with the senior manager in a behavioral and background chat. Next up was a call with a junior team member and an exec, which was mostly behavioral with a case question thrown in. Then came a 4-hour take-home assignment to see if I could do the job. Finally, I had a chat with the head of the department and then got a verbal offer. The recruiter and I kept in touch throughout, checking in on my interest and answering my questions.
- What draws you to Skillz?
- Could you give me an overview of your career history?
- Describe a situation where you had to manage several stakeholders.

The interview process was discouraging, especially after I invested time in preparing and using the apps beforehand. I even came up with app ideas to show my interest, but I didn't get to discuss them. During the phone screen and the main interview, they really focused on grades and formal achievements like promotions or awards, not so much on personal aspects, creativity, or unique experiences. Interviewers came in pairs, asked scripted questions for the case studies, and seemed annoyed when I didn't give them the exact answers they expected. They mentioned being very selective about hiring and the importance of finding the right fit, but they didn't spend much time getting to know me beyond assessing my performance. It felt like they already had all the info they needed from my resume. Overall, it was uncomfortable and unwelcoming, despite their possible good intentions. The interviewers came across as arrogant, fake-friendly, and disinterested, leading to a mutual feeling of not wanting to proceed.
- Case study on A/B testing
- Case study on user acquisition

The process kicks off with two technical assessments, which are basically timed math tests where you have to solve problems super fast. After that, there are four interviews. The first one is a case study with a junior analyst who wasn't very experienced and just read questions without guiding the conversation. It felt like a gamble getting interviewed by someone who might not know the material or how to interview. The case study is followed by regular interviews focused on fit. The technical assessments felt like they had weird priorities.
- What are your strengths?
- What are your motivations for this role?
- What are you looking for in your next opportunity?
