There were 3 interview sessions, but two of them were panels. The same people were in both panels and asked the same questions. They wasted my entire day. It was ridiculous and a case of dance monkey dance.

Before you can even get an interview, you need to answer some essay questions as part of the application. These essay questions are super important and a big reason why you'll get selected for an interview. Make sure you write these really well and answer them like a pro. This is your very first impression with SIUE Housing. If you do get an interview, know that they already like you. Most of the interview questions will be pretty similar to the essay questions. The essay questions themselves (which are actually on the application) require at least 250 words each. 1. Why do you want to be a Desk Manager? 2. What are three skills or traits a great DM needs, and give examples of how you've shown them? 3. How do you think of quality service, and how can a DM show quality service while working? 4. What's the DM's job in keeping the residential communities safe and secure?

After sending in applications, there was an initial phone chat. Then, I was one of three people invited for a full-day in-person interview. This involved meetings with the Dean, Chair, Program Director, and most of the other faculty in small groups. I also had a dinner with the search committee before the main day. On the interview day itself, breakfast and dinner were on my own. Lunch was with some current undergrad and grad students, though they weren't really into my area, so it didn't really help find a good fit. The day also included a research talk that was more like a teaching demo, with both undergrads and faculty attending. Everyone there filled out rating forms.

It was a typical 2-day academic faculty interview. For the most part, the days consisted of individual 30-minute meetings with various future colleagues, which were generally pretty laid-back. The quality of the chats varied depending on who I was talking to, but most were really nice. Someone even mentioned during a one-on-one that I seemed like a really strong candidate, which helped. Meetings with senior folks were about the details of pay and perks. There was a research presentation with some insightful questions from the faculty. We also had some group meals with people. The overall vibe was friendly and felt more like a chat to see if my research and teaching interests aligned with the department's needs and resources.
