Support Engineer
It was a pretty standard process for a technical support engineer, several stages over the course of about 1 month: 1. Phone interview with the recruiter. 2. Take home test via email. 3. Onsite interview and chance to meet the Support team in the Portland office. 4. Phone interview with the hiring manager. 5. Onsite interview in the main San Francisco office. I enjoyed meeting the team at each of these stages, and had a lot of fun with the challenges at the onsite interview in San Francisco. Though I would not have tackled these challenges on my own, with gentle guidance and prompting from the interviewers I was able to accomplish each stage, and left feeling very confident in my abilities. Already I could tell the opportunities this job presents for learning and working with fantastically smart team members.
- Customer Simulation: install in non-standard environment.
- How do you determine when to escalate to engineering?
- Technical simulation: provided with a script that constantly performs transactions on the host, how can you adjust its behavior to fully utilize the resources of the host?
Customer Support Engineer
I applied last year and they asked me to re-apply this year. The first step was a recruiter call. Normally there's a take-home coding assignment, but I'd already done one last year and they had it on file. Then there was a 30-45 minute phone interview with the hiring manager where we talked about my current role and the support position. After that, I had a phone interview with someone on the support team in Prague. Next up was a 3-hour onsite in Portland. It was a panel interview with the Portland team, and I did a quick troubleshooting project with their product. Then recruiting called to see how I felt about the role and if it was a good fit, and they wanted me to come to San Francisco for more interviews at HQ. The final step was a 3-hour onsite at HQ in San Francisco, another panel with people from different departments. The whole thing took about 2 months. It was longer than usual, but they ran it really well and I always knew what was coming next. Recruiting kept me in the loop and answered all my questions.
- Can you tell me about your experience with distributed systems?
- Can you discuss your background with databases, Linux, and coding?
- Troubleshoot an issue with installing MemSQL on an ec2 instance that doesn't meet the required standards.
