So, the whole thing kicked off with a recruiter chat. She was pretty upfront about the company trying to clean up its image, especially after some rough reviews on Glassdoor, and mentioned they'd brought in new leadership to sort things out. After that, I spoke with the hiring manager, which was super promising – really clicked, and the recruiter even said it was a glowing review. She was quick to set up a panel interview for the next week. But then… radio silence. I followed up a bunch, but ended up getting ghosted. No clue why, no update, just… nothing. It’s pretty ironic for a company that says it cares about improving its reputation and candidate experience, you know? Ghosting people, especially after a good chat, really doesn’t look good.

I got contacted by a recruiter on LinkedIn. First, I did a quick chat with the recruiter, then I had a video call with the associate controller. The recruiter was great, really communicative and followed up. The associate controller interview wasn't so great. I'm a top performer right now, leading an accounting department and I'm overqualified for this. They said they liked me but weren't moving forward because I don't currently process payroll with ADP. I argued that learning a system like ADP shouldn't be the deciding factor for a leader, but rather the ability to learn and use systems to their full potential. I've hired payroll people before, and a self-starter is always better than someone who just pushes buttons. It's probably for the best, we clearly weren't a match, and reading other reviews confirms that.

I had an initial chat with a junior team member about the company and the role. I also completed a coding challenge, and they mentioned my solution was quite novel. Next, I interviewed with a more senior team member where we talked about Machine Learning topics. Following that, I had a more involved coding task: creating a basic soccer game simulation using OOP, which again, resulted in a unique solution. I felt positive about how things went and thought I'd made a good impression. Unfortunately, about 1.5 weeks later, I got an automated email stating the position was eliminated or paused. It was a bit of a letdown, especially after investing so much time in the process.

I had a really good interview experience with SimSpace. The whole thing moved super fast, like four rounds in about two weeks. They kept me updated the whole time, and I felt really supported. The Senior Talent Acquisition Partner was amazing, like a real partner from the start. Everyone I talked to was prepared, asked good questions, and seemed genuinely excited about their work. Even though I didn't get an offer, it was a positive experience all around and made a good impression.
