Behavioral Technical System Design Group

So, first I had the standard HR Screening with the recruiter. Then I talked to the Hiring Manager, it was a super chill chat about how I work with others, my thinking, and just generally how I am as a developer. The manager was really positive and said they wanted to move forward. After that, I had the virtual onsite, which had a 1-hour technical interview, a 30-min system design, and a 30-min culture fit chat. The technical part was cool, we worked together on an API, fixing and improving methods. The system design was a bit harder for me, but the interviewer was helpful and guided me when I got stuck, even explaining what I missed. The culture fit was really laid-back, we just talked about books and hobbies. The very next day, I got a great offer, and I accepted after thinking it over.

Behavioral Technical Coding

The company was pretty slow with emails and setting up interviews, kinda disorganized and didn't really respect my time. They asked for my availability and then took over a week to reply, by which point some of the times I gave them were no longer good. All the interviews were on Zoom. The first interview was a panel with an engineer, product person, and designers, who seemed nice. The second interview was a technical one using React, which I thought was fair and they really wanted to see how I think. The last interview was with the CTO, who gave me a weird vibe. He was distant and asked some basic behavioral questions that I felt didn't really help him understand my actual experience. I didn't get an offer in the end, and they never responded when I asked for feedback.

  • The technical interview was open-book and on Zoom with no tricks; they mainly wanted to understand your thought process.

Behavioral Other

The first interview was a phone call. It was pretty casual, and I talked a lot about my background working in a busy environment. The interviewer was really nice and made me feel at ease, even answering questions I hadn't asked yet. After that, I was invited to a second interview over Zoom. I met with two managers there and introduced myself. They were both very friendly, shared a bit about themselves, and also made me feel quite comfortable.

Behavioral

This company is not good with applicants and the interview process is unclear. The interviewer canceled the initial interview 30 minutes before it was scheduled and wanted to reschedule for later in the day, 1.5 hours later than the time I provided. The interview itself was okay, but the interviewer seemed stressed and distracted. She mentioned that 'depending on the day and hitting numbers or not, you may have to work nights or evenings,' and when I asked how often that was, she said, 'Don't want to say often, but that's start up life.' I understand that work isn't always 8 hours a day, but the amount of work outside normal hours she talked about was a major red flag. The interview went well and the interviewer was nice, but I didn't hear back for months and then got a simple rejection email that was likely sent to many people.
