Data Scientist
Really negative interview experience here, and honestly not surprised given some of the reviews I've seen (also, the positive reviews seem super sus, and I'm pretty sure at least one negative review vanished). Started with an easy initial assessment that took about 45 minutes – some lengthy calculations but basically easy concepts. The next few steps were also pretty easy, and I actually enjoyed the clustering project. Then came the onsite where I met with some senior leadership and lead data scientists. Most people were nice, but two out of the five or six I met seemed kind of incompetent, like they were fresh out of college. One of them said something completely wild, claiming that no one, not even in finance, uses machine learning the way they do. Oh, and one interviewer had their phone buzzing non-stop on the table. Earlier on, there were also big delays, like months, in getting responses.
- Some interviewers discussed the problems they are currently facing.
- Only one interviewer asked questions in a well-structured manner.
Data Scientist
Had a technical test with 4 probability questions first. Then had a phone screen, followed by another phone interview, and then a third phone interview. They scheduled an in-person interview that got cancelled twice, but then I got the job. It was weird because the 'office' was just an apartment building in NYC and the CEO was sleeping in his bed?
- In which statistical distribution would you model X?
- What is a p-value?
Data Scientist
First, there were 4 straightforward probability questions. Then, a phone screen with a data scientist where they asked basic definition questions about machine learning concepts. After that, a technical assessment with more probability questions and a coding assignment in Python involving data analysis, plus some SQL questions. They gave a week for this part. It wasn't the clearest assessment, but they were helpful if you had questions. Finally, a call with the Data Science head to go over the technical assessment, followed by a half-day onsite interview talking with the team leads. The atmosphere wasn't very stressful.
- Asked about conditional probability problems.
- Asked to describe basic concepts like regularization.
- Asked to explain the difference between MLE and Bayesian estimates.
