Product Manager
It was pretty quick and responsive from the get go. I had two phone interviews and then an in person interview. In person consisted of meeting with two product managers and a ux designer in a casual round robin and then with the product lead to discuss experience and whiteboard out some questions.
- How do you keep stakeholders informed about development progress?
- What tools or techniques do you employ to maintain team motivation?
- Could you illustrate with a whiteboard the concept of building an MVP?
Concierge
Applied online back in Jan 2014. Got a phone screen from HR in March where they asked situational and general company questions. All pretty straightforward if you checked out their website first. About three weeks later, I met the SFO General Manager and his Fleet Manager. They were 30 minutes late due to a customer emergency, which is understandable. We had a good connection and a casual chat. They asked about my background and personality to see how I'd fit Silvercar's culture. Got an email offer later that week. HR called to finalize details and salary about a week after that. But, they couldn't meet my salary request, even though I mentioned it during the phone screen. Sadly, I had to pass because of their miscommunication. They're still a startup with growing pains, but I think they have a great product and service. They really need to improve their hiring process.
- Situational-based questions were asked during the phone screen.
- The in-person interview focused on personality fit questions.
Project Manager/Developer
The interview process started with a phone screen by HR, followed by a technical phone call with the dev team where an online technical question was posed. The final stage was an on-site interview involving a project manager and the dev team. The first two stages were standard tech interviews covering culture fit and technical aspects. However, the on-site interview was quite unusual. Upon arrival, I wasn't met, and my subsequent messages to HR went unanswered. Eventually, another employee helped me find the interview room. Inside, I met with two separate groups. Neither group seemed to have a clear leader, and their roles weren't clarified. The first group asked questions outside the scope of the job description, and a whiteboard test felt condescending. The second group, the dev team, seemed unprepared and uninterested, sometimes distracted by their laptops and asking impromptu questions. They also mentioned the CTO would miss the interview. By the end, I felt like I was leading the discussion, asking them my prepared questions until I ran out. I then ended the meeting. I sent thank-you emails, but Silvercar never responded, leaving me feeling disrespected and ghosted.
- Can you explain the distinction between a class and an object?
Project Manager
The interview process was informal and relaxed. I met with the CTO, Dev Manager, and a Senior Developer. The initial interviews took place at local coffee shops. The final interview was in the office, where we discussed the hiring process and next steps. They seemed focused on finding someone who would fit well with the team, company, and vision.
- How do you view tools and their optimal usage?
