Customer Success Manager
The interview process had 3 stages. First was a recruiter interview where I had to 'tell my life story,' which felt a bit cringey. Then came a teammate interview, followed by a hiring manager interview that included a client roleplay presentation. While everyone was friendly and we had good conversations on calls, the recruiter was a bit pushy via email and rushed me to schedule interviews quickly, which made me feel less prepared than I would have liked.

Don't worry too much about the reviews you see online, as people tend to write them more when they've had a bad experience. After you submit your application and answer some questions, along with completing a mock email, you might have to wait for the next hiring period. The next step involves a typing test and another mock email. Then comes a video interview that's like a 'lifestory' interview. After that, you'll have a technical interview, which is the most challenging part but definitely manageable. They provide you with all the necessary information to do well. Make sure to read everything carefully and pay attention to the context and details. It's okay not to be perfect in this stage, and you'll have opportunities to reflect and get feedback. How you handle this part could influence their decision. Once this is completed, you'll need to provide contact details for three references, including a manager and a colleague. Following that, you'll receive a call about your technical interview and then an offer. Everyone I interacted with was helpful, professional, and engaged, even though they seemed very busy and overworked. I waited 7 months for the second stage after applying, and then it took two weeks from that point to receive an offer.

So after I built a trial store and sent in my CV and cover letter, a local team lead emailed me saying my application was moving forward. Then I got a link to book my ‘Life Story’ interview. This interview is pretty much what it sounds like – they want to hear about your career journey and how it led you to apply to Shopify. After that, I got an email confirming I’d be moving to the next stage, called ‘The Gauntlet’. I booked this interview and had to send in three professional references. ‘The Gauntlet’ involves a series of practice scenarios to see if you naturally fit the Shopify Guru role. There’s not much you can do to prepare, but make sure you’re familiar with the provided resources. Scenarios 1 & 2 are about handling a sample call from a merchant. After getting feedback on the first call, you have to use that to improve for the second call. Scenarios 3 & 4 involve direct messaging a merchant through the app on your trial store (3), while also chatting with a team member in a separate chat (4). Scenario 5 is about answering an email within 10 minutes. After feedback, you have to answer an email again, this time within 7 minutes. Later on, once my references were checked, I got a call saying I was successful.
- A merchant bought a domain outside of Shopify, and even though they followed the instructions to link it to their store yesterday, the store isn't live yet.
