Backend Developer
It started with an HR chat, then a technical challenge, followed by more talks with developers, the engineering director, and the software architect. It was all pretty straightforward, quick, and clearly explained. The whole thing wrapped up in just about two weeks.
- Can you tell me about a challenging project your team worked on recently?
Staff Software Engineer
So, the interview process was pretty typical for a place that thinks they're hot stuff. 1) There wasn't really an HR person, just a part-time HR person, so I had to schedule all 5 rounds myself, which was a blast. 2) Then there was a hiring manager screen, which was actually the best part. He said he was looking for a unicorn but was only paying like a junior dev, lol. 2) Next up was a coding round. No starting point, just an hour to build a server that connects to 3 fake weather endpoints and parses the data.
- Build a server that integrates with three fake endpoints and parses weather data.
- Create a single REST endpoint to retrieve the current temperature for a given latitude and longitude from various upstream weather services.
- Imagine we need to design an API that provides rate quote estimates from different trucking companies for a specific origin and destination. How would you design this API to handle approximately 10,000 requests per second?
Content Manager
Someone reached out to schedule an interview for what they called a "confidential search." I was a bit hesitant because of that, wondering if they were trying to avoid a lot of applications or if they were secretly replacing someone. Regardless, I scheduled it. But the day before, they canceled without giving a reason, and I never got a response when I asked why. It felt like a lot of red flags and sketchy behavior, and recent reviews seem to suggest this is common for Shipwell. So, be careful if they contact you, and if you work there, maybe keep an eye out.
- Are you open to talking more about this role?
Operations Manager
Recruiter reached out to me online. Had an initial call with the recruiter, then moved on to the hiring manager. Had a phone call with the hiring manager and then was asked to speak with several other people. Everything seemed good, I received an offer and was really excited to get started. I countered back on the salary and asked about a potential signing bonus, tuition reimbursement, and the team I’d be on. Two hours later I got an email saying they had decided to “go with another candidate” after a written offer was in front of me!!!! Couldn’t believe it and left a bad taste in my mouth to say the least.
- Could you introduce yourself and talk about your background?
