Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Shift Technology.
Data Scientist
My interview experience started with a screening call, then an online interview. After that, I had a 1-hour in-person interview which was mostly technical, and they also gave me an office tour. They mentioned they wanted to schedule another interview, and the recruiter contacted me for my availability. However, after that, they completely ghosted me and I haven't heard back since. It's a bad look to ghost candidates you've actively interviewed, especially when they've come to your office.
- If you have two data tables, what happens when you perform an inner join?
Data Scientist Intern
So there were 3 interviews total. First, a quick 30-minute fit interview with HR. Then, a more technical 1-hour interview with a team member. Finally, a 30-minute combined fit and technical interview with the Hiring Manager.
- Can you explain the distinction between supervised and unsupervised learning?
Data Scientist
The interview process was entirely remote. It started with a contact that wasn't HR, where we discussed my CV and motivation with the technical team. Then there was an online technical test focused on competitive programming. This was followed by two more technical interviews via video call. I was even advised to study a particular subject for the interview twice, and there seemed to be confusion as different people from the company had different information. Despite positive feedback on my algorithmic knowledge and experience in the technical interviews, I was rejected for not being adaptable to a 'diffuse environment,' a skill I'm unsure how they evaluated. I did mention to the recruitment agency that they provided me with incorrect instructions for one interview, which might have influenced the decision or led to an excuse for not selecting me.
- Questions about my CV.
- Brain teasers.
- A technical assessment was conducted.
