It was pretty disorganized. You'd have an interview and then suddenly more people would join, and then others would pop in with questions. A lot of stuff was happening, and they pretty much wanted to hire you right there. It was really strange, and the pay was minimum wage.

We connected well because we'd both lost our husbands recently. I told her about my past jobs and why I moved from California to Vermont during the recession when there weren't many jobs. I stayed with my youngest daughter, her husband, and my three grandkids until I found my own place. She was pleased I lived nearby for the job. I took a drug test and agreed to a background check. After three weeks, I got the job offer. Then I came in and did a bunch of tests after watching some videos, which took all day. The next afternoon, they called and said I'd start as a bagger and then learn to be a cashier, which is exactly what happened. Now I'm a full-time checkout cashier.
