First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Shamrock Trading Corporation.
Business Development Manager
The first call with the recruiter was great, we really connected. But the two women I interviewed with in Houston were ridiculous. They barely asked questions about the actual role and one asked how I felt about micromanaging, which was funny considering it's apparently their reputation. They also asked why I left a commission-only job from 8 years ago, which was a silly question given the opportunity for a solid base salary and bonus structure now. It felt like they didn't prepare for the interview and were just asking random questions. I refuse to be belittled by an employer. They mentioned they are hiring 70-80 people this year, which shows growth but also high turnover, likely due to the environment, management, pay, or lack of opportunities. Many people probably try it for a few weeks or months and then leave. They asked the micromanaging question to see how far they could push me. If you interview, stand your ground and don't let them play you with their idiotic questions.
- What does micromanaging mean to you?
- Can you explain why you left your first sales positions from 2018?
Business Development
I got contacted by a really professional and nice recruiter. The phone interview went well, and I was excited because the company has a great reputation. But the in-person interview was the worst I've ever had. Two women interviewed me, and it was awkward from the start. It felt like they asked 40 rapid-fire questions from a script, not like a real conversation. One interviewer seemed disengaged with her eyes closed sometimes, making me feel like my answers didn't matter. The vibe was tense and confrontational, with questions feeling more like attacks than inquiries about my experience. They barely talked about the company, role, or culture. Even with an offer, I wouldn't have taken it after that. The interview process usually reflects the company culture, and this didn't match their 'best places to work' image.
- Can you describe your previous job?
Business Development Manager
The first step was a phone chat, it was pretty laid back. He asked what I knew about the company, then went into detail about what each brand under the company umbrella does/offers. Then he started asking more sales-focused questions, like why I was looking to leave my current job and why I was interested in Shamrock. To wrap things up, there were a few questions about salary, and then he asked if I had any questions for him (he suggested asking something, but maybe not about benefits). A few hours later, he emailed to say I was moving on to the second interview.
- Why do you want to work in sales?
- Why are you leaving your current job?
- What motivates you?
