I had two 10-minute phone calls with a local rep and Ron Kolb on different days. They barely asked about my background even though I have a lot of experience. It felt more like they were reading compliance questions from a notecard about the pay and making sure I understood it's commission-only with no benefits, and that I'm my own boss. Given how expensive the ads are, I have no clue how anyone would make the $60-170k mentioned in the online posting. They even said I could do this part-time. A company that trusts its sales team would pay them to represent their business instead of being the 40th rep from Sensi to call on a business. Also, the people featured in the magazine seem to be the same ones in their cheesy orientation video. I suspect repeat business and internal leads go to them, and they snag any good leads I bring in once I burn out from not earning enough.

Behavioral Presentation

After submitting a custom cover letter detailing my editorial background, passions, and what I'd bring to Sensi, along with three writing samples, I didn't hear back for a few weeks. Then, the editor in chief contacted me about potential work for the Colorado edition and scheduled a Zoom interview. We had a 20-minute chat where she described the article types she needed, I shared some of my ideas, and we agreed on my suitability, deadlines, and rates, which were quite reasonable. It was a straightforward process.

This was the easiest interview I've ever had, mostly because I really connected with the founder, Ron Kolb. It felt like chatting with a friend. I'm not sure how it would have gone if we were very different people. But for me, it was a great experience where we just clicked on topic after topic. He was insightful, direct, thought strategically, and was genuinely passionate about the business and its mission. Ron isn't one for games; he's focused on hiring the right people to get things done. If you're a good fit, you're a good fit, and both sides will realize it.

The interview was mainly a discussion about the role and to confirm I understood it was commission-only. They complimented me a lot, which felt a bit off, like they were really eager to hire someone. It seemed a bit strange. The job had no benefits, and they mentioned it would take months to start earning commission. On top of that, if I took the job, I'd have to pay for my own flight and hotel for training in Colorado. I'm really not sure about this company.
