Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Semrush.
Account Executive
I had one call with a HR recruiter. They were quick to respond and professional. The email they sent gave a good overview of the process, timeline, and who I would meet, but didn't mention the final round tasks. The interview itself felt unstructured and lacked substance. I didn't feel like I had a good environment to openly discuss how my experience fits the role. The conversation didn't flow well and felt like just ticking boxes. For example, it started with a 6-slide presentation about SEMRush, which is info I'd expect a candidate to have already researched. I didn't learn anything new about the company. It was basically 'here's our company, got questions?'. It would be better to have an agenda and purpose for the call so both sides know what to expect. When I asked about next steps, the recruiter said they'd send my CV to the hiring manager who would then decide if they want to move forward. This made me feel like the interview was pointless; how can a hiring manager know what I can offer if they're just going to get my CV anyway, why even talk to me?
- Do you have experience selling to enterprises?
- Have you consistently exceeded sales quotas?
- Tell me about your typical sales cycle.
Sales Executive
The interview was easy and relaxed, making me feel comfortable. It was brief with a quick turnaround for an offer.
- What were the challenges you faced in your previous role, and what steps did you take to overcome them?
Account Executive
I applied online and got my first interview really fast. A few things seemed off to me: 1 - The email had weird phrasing, like it was written by someone not fluent in English. 2 - The attached PDFs about the hiring process also seemed poorly written with several mistakes. I checked the interviewer's LinkedIn and saw they were new, part-time, and lacked experience in the field. The initial screening had typical questions and felt scripted, like they were reading off a list. I got a computer-generated rejection email a few days later.
- What kind of workplace culture do you prefer?
