First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at SEIU.
Organizer
I interviewed with four people, but one interviewer left midway. This same interviewer had previously emailed about having many strong applicants and mentioned it again before the interview. She and the other three interviewers seemed disengaged, making the process feel like a waste of time, especially when one interviewer yawned. I got a callback the next day and was told I qualified but they weren't moving forward. She then discussed other national and internal organizing opportunities with SEIU and promised to send more information, which she never did. Ultimately, SEIU Local 105 seems to hire through nepotism and just went through the motions. I'd advise against applying there.
- Tell me about why you are interested in working for SEIU.

I applied online and got a phone interview two days later. Then, a week after that, I had an in-person group interview. The final interview was scheduled for the day after the group interview. However, the whole process felt really unprofessional. During the group interview, the presenters seemed unsure about the schedule and even left the room mid-interview, making us wait. When it came to scheduling the final interview, the HR person stopped responding to my emails, so I couldn't confirm my time slot. She finally replied late the night before, and I couldn't make it. After I told them I took another job, they called multiple times to question my decision. I was firm in my choice, as a disorganized interview process is a big warning sign.
- Can you tell me about a risky decision you've made?
- What's your motivation for working in SEIU/labor?
Organizer
I attended a three-day training recruitment session with a labor coalition, which was an AFL-CIO recruitment event. After that, I decided to pursue an internship or apprenticeship with SEIU international. The interviews happened at the conclusion of the event, and the following week, I traveled to D.C. for training in the Wave program.
- Who would you invite to a dinner party, limited to four people, excluding religious figures and deceased family members?
- Can you recall a past job experience that you would choose not to include on your resume?
- Describe how you would handle a situation where workers at a site are eager to organize, but a numerical analysis indicates it's unlikely to succeed – would you proceed or abandon the effort?
