First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories.
Electrical Engineer
It was a Microsoft teams phone interview. We started by introducing ourselves. Then, I was asked to talk about myself and what courses I took. The technical interview lasted about an hour and covered basic power system questions. After that, there were some basic behavioral questions.
- Could you tell me about the SEL company?
- Regarding transformers, what is the secondary current based on the ratio?
- Can you explain what a ground fault is?
Power Engineer
So interviews were like 3 stages total : first up was a phone call with HR for standard HR questions then they hit me with like 20-25 technical questions. Second was a video interview on Webex where we talked about deep technical stuff in Power Systems Engineering and also software. Finally, I had an onsite interview that started with a 1-hour talk and Q&A, then two 1-on-1 technical sessions. They ended up offering me the job right after the onsite. My guess is they make the decision based on how you perform in that second round.
- Questions about power system protection, specifically distance relays.
- Questions concerning power system dynamic models, including synchrophasors.
- Questions related to load flow studies.
Electrical Engineer
The interview process had 2 stages. Stage 1 was a 1-hour phone interview with HR and the hiring team, covering behavioral and basic technical questions. Stage 2 was a 5-hour virtual 'on-site' interview. This included a 30-minute project presentation, 1 hour of Q&A, a 1-hour interview with the hiring manager and a senior manager, a 2-hour technical interview with the team, and a 30-minute benefits discussion with HR. I'm waiting to hear back.
- Were there any behavioral questions?
- Do you have questions about your management skills?
- Can you describe your thought process?
